Professors Zhang and Zia Present at the HI TEC Conference July 2011

From the HI-TEC website:

HI-TEC is a national conference on advanced technical education where technical educators, counselors, industry professionals, and technicians can update their knowledge and skills. Charged with Educating America's Technical Workforce, the event focuses on the preparation needed by the existing and future workforce for companies in the high-tech sectors that drive our nation's economy.

HI-TEC uniquely explores the convergence of scientific disciplines and technologies including:

  • Advanced Manufacturing Technologies
  • Energy and Environmental Technologies
  • Biotechnology and Chemical Process Technologies
  • Engineering Technologies
  • Information, Geospatial, & Security Technologies
  • Learning and Evaluation
  • Electronics, Micro and Nano Technologies
  • Best Practices in Technology Education
  • Technicians in the Workplace

The Professors' Workshop (Session 9B at Seacliff C):

Using a Cognitive Hands-on Mechatronic Design Project to Enhance Learning and Thinking
This session will consist of a mini-workshop on hands-on interdisciplinary and collaborative mechatronic product design activities used in the departments of mechanical engineering technology and computer engineering technology at New York City College of Technology. Participants will assemble remote controlled robots with sensors to detect hazardous conditions. Hands-on activities include working on differential and steering systems, working on sensors, and robot controllers, and programming the robots. The presenters will show how a cognitive hands-on approach enables students to concentrate on subject matter, make visual connections between technology fields, and work effectively in a collaborative and cooperative teamwork environment that has been proven to be very effective in learning.
